Willis is a city in north-central Montgomery County, Texas, set in the Piney Woods about eight miles north of Conroe and roughly 40 miles north of downtown Houston. It sits astride Interstate 45, which runs through the community and has made it a natural staging point for Houston's northward expansion, while Lake Conroe and the Sam Houston National Forest frame its northern and eastern edges. The 2020 census counted about 6,400 residents, a figure that has grown quickly as the surrounding Willis ISD area absorbs suburban development. The city's origins are rooted in the railroad.
