Pearland is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, with portions extending into Harris and Fort Bend counties, located about 15 miles south of downtown Houston. Home to roughly 126,000 residents, it is a principal city in the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area and one of the largest suburban communities on Houston's south side. The city's origins are agricultural. Pearland began in the 1880s near a siding on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, and when a post office opened in 1893 the settlement was briefly called Mark Belt. Later that year the name was changed to Pearland, a reference to the pear trees that grew throughout the area. The town was promoted as an "Agricultural Eden," and while early setbacks including the 1900 hurricane slowed its growth, the community eventually re-established itself and began expanding toward Houston as the region grew. Today Pearland functions primarily as a residential city tied to Houston's employment core. State Highway 288 runs along the city's eastern side as the primary commuter route to the Texas Medical Center and downtown Houston, with Beltway 8 providing east-west access. The Texas Medical Center—the world's largest medical complex—is a major employment draw for Pearland residents, and William P. Hobby Airport lies just to the north. Public schools are served mainly by the Pearland Independent School District, which operates about 24 schools, with portions of the city falling under Alvin ISD and Fort Bend ISD. The housing stock is anchored by large master-planned communities, most notably the 3,500-acre Shadow Creek Ranch, alongside established and newer subdivisions. Recreation centers on parks such as the 43-acre Independence Park with its amphitheater and trails, plus neighborhood amenities. The combination of a diverse, family-oriented community, strong school options, and direct access to Houston defines Pearland's role in the metro.
