Livingston is the county seat of Polk County, Texas, set in the Piney Woods of East Texas roughly 74 miles northeast of Houston and about 46 miles south of Lufkin. With a population of about 5,600, it is the largest city in Polk County. The town serves as the gateway to Lake Livingston, one of the largest lakes in Texas, and its economy and daily life are shaped by the lake, the surrounding timber country, and its role as a regional government and services center. Lake Livingston State Park, just outside the city, offers more than 10 miles of hiking trails at the edge of the Sam Houston National Forest, along with fishing, boating, and camping on the lake's shores. The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas maintains its reservation about 17 miles east of Livingston, adding a significant cultural and historical dimension to the area.
