Hill Country River Community

Listings in Hunt, TX

Welcome to Hunt, a Hill Country community where the two forks of the Guadalupe River meet, known for its summer camps and riverside lodges.

Hunt is an unincorporated community in western Kerr County, Texas, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. It sits where the north and south forks of the Guadalupe River come together along State Highway 39, amid the rugged limestone hills that separate the Edwards Plateau from the coastal plain. At an elevation near 1,900 feet, Hunt's setting is defined by clear-running river water, cypress-lined banks, and rolling cedar-covered hills. The community has long been known as a summer destination. Beginning in the early twentieth century, the Hill Country's cool river valleys and open land attracted the founders of private youth camps, and Hunt grew into one of Texas's most concentrated clusters of summer camps. Camps for girls such as Camp Mystic, Camp Waldemar, and Camp La Junta, along with Camp Stewart for boys and the co-ed Mo-Ranch conference center, remain central to the area's identity and seasonal economy. Each summer, a year-round population of a few hundred residents swells as campers, staff, and visiting families arrive. Beyond the camps, Hunt supports a small tourism economy of riverfront lodges, cabins, and bed-and-breakfasts that cater to visitors drawn to Guadalupe River recreation and Hill Country scenery. Since 1972, the community has also been home to the La Hacienda Addiction Treatment Center, a long-standing local institution. Public school students attend the Hunt Independent School District, a small PK-8 district nestled among the hills, with older students continuing to neighboring districts. With its riverside setting, camp culture, and proximity to Kerrville, Hunt offers a quiet, recreation-oriented way of life in one of the Hill Country's most scenic river valleys.

City Guide

About Hunt

Real Estate & Housing

Hunt's real estate character is shaped by the Guadalupe River and the Hill Country landscape. Properties range from riverfront homes and cabins to weekend lodges, bed-and-breakfast inns, and larger Hill Country tracts with cedar and live oak cover. The presence of longstanding summer camps and vacation rentals means a meaningful share of the housing stock is oriented to seasonal use rather than year-round residency. Buyers are typically drawn to river frontage, views, and privacy, and the market skews toward individual, often custom-built properties rather than conventional subdivisions. This gives Hunt a distinctly rural, recreation-focused housing character uncommon in more developed Hill Country towns.

Neighborhoods

Hunt is organized more by geography than by formal neighborhoods. The community is defined by its two river forks: the North Fork and South Fork of the Guadalupe, each lined with camps, lodges, and homes along State Highway 39 and the surrounding county roads. Camp properties and conference centers such as Mo-Ranch occupy large riverfront tracts, while residences and vacation rentals cluster along the water and the hillsides above it. This fork-by-fork layout—north and south—gives Hunt a spread-out, river-centered settlement pattern rather than a traditional town center, with most properties enjoying proximity to the water or views of the surrounding hills.

Lifestyle in Hunt

Hunt's lifestyle revolves around the Guadalupe River and the rhythm of the Hill Country seasons. In summer, the community comes alive as camps fill and families arrive for swimming, tubing, and fishing along the cypress-lined river. The rest of the year, Hunt settles into a quiet, rural pace centered on the outdoors, local lodges, and bed-and-breakfasts that welcome weekend visitors. The long-running summer camp tradition gives the area a distinctive seasonal energy, while residents enjoy the Hill Country's characteristic mix of river access, rolling cedar hills, and dark, clear nights. It is a tourism-and-recreation economy wrapped in a small, close-knit community.

Schools & Education

Hunt is served by the Hunt Independent School District, a small PK-8 district located in the Hill Country and surrounded by the Guadalupe River's forks. The district provides elementary and middle school education in a close-knit, small-school setting characteristic of rural Texas. After completing eighth grade, students transition to high school in neighboring districts. This compact arrangement keeps younger students close to home while older students continue their education in the larger surrounding school systems of the Kerrville area.

Getting Around

Hunt is reached by State Highway 39, the two-lane Hill Country route that runs through the community along the Guadalupe River forks and connects westward into the surrounding Kerr County backcountry and eastward toward Kerrville. The area's roads wind through river valleys and limestone hills, with limited public transit, so personal vehicles are essential. From Hunt, Kerrville provides the nearest concentration of services, while San Antonio and Austin are reached via the larger Hill Country highway network. The rural road system contributes to the community's quiet, removed character.

Parks & Recreation

The Guadalupe River is the center of recreation in Hunt, offering swimming, tubing, fishing, and riverside relaxation along its two forks. The community's summer camps provide structured outdoor programming on hundreds of acres of Hill Country land, while the surrounding countryside offers hiking, birding, and scenic drives through cedar-and-oak hills. Lodges and bed-and-breakfasts cater to weekend visitors seeking river access, and the nearby Hill Country towns and parks extend the range of outdoor options. For residents and visitors alike, recreation in Hunt is inseparable from the river that runs through it.
