Edna is the seat of Jackson County in southeast Texas, positioned along U.S. Highway 59 — the emerging I-69 corridor — roughly 100 miles southwest of Houston, 25 miles northeast of Victoria, and about 45 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. The community grew up around the railroad: the first train arrived on July 4, 1882, and by January 1883 residents had voted to move the county seat from nearby Texana to the new town. Edna took its name from Edna Louise Traylor, the first child born in the community. As the county seat, Edna functions as the governmental and commercial heart of a lightly populated, mostly rural county of roughly 15,000 people. Government offices, banks, and locally owned businesses cluster around a compact downtown grid that developed near the tracks, while ranchland and farmland extend in every direction. Agriculture and ranching remain part of the area's fabric, and the town's role as a regional service center gives it a steadier commercial base than many towns of its size. The Jackson County Memorial Library and other civic institutions anchor a downtown that has retained much of its early twentieth-century footprint. The defining geographic feature is Lake Texana, an 11,000-acre impoundment on the Navidad River that sits about six miles east of Edna. The reservoir, built in the 1980s, submerged the site of old Texana and turned the area into a regional destination for boating, fishing, and lake recreation. That mix — county government, a rural agricultural hinterland, and a major lake — shapes the character of a community that remains unhurried and family-oriented. Edna's position between Victoria and Houston, with the Gulf Coast within easy reach, gives it deep South Texas roots and practical access to the region's larger cities and employment centers.
