Comfort is a small unincorporated community and census-designated place in Kendall County, Texas, set along Cypress Creek in the rolling Texas Hill Country northwest of San Antonio. Founded in 1854 by German Freethinkers and abolitionists, the town carries one of the most distinctive settlement histories in the Hill Country, and much of its early built fabric remains intact — a large portion of the community is listed as a National Historic District, with some two dozen historic markers documenting its story. The town's German roots set it apart. Unlike many Hill Country settlements founded by church-centered immigrant groups, Comfort was established by freethinking intellectuals opposed to slavery, and that independent, civic-minded strain runs through its history. The Treue der Union Monument, commemorating German Texans who died opposing the Confederacy, is among the community's most significant landmarks.
