Bigfoot Wallace Country

Listings in Bigfoot, TX

Welcome to Bigfoot, a small Frio County community named for Texas Ranger William "Bigfoot" Wallace, in the ranch country of South Texas.

Bigfoot is an unincorporated community in the northeastern corner of Frio County, Texas, at the junction of Farm Roads 462 and 472, about eighteen miles northeast of the county seat of Pearsall. The surrounding landscape is South Texas ranch country — open, rolling brushland between San Antonio and the Rio Grande Plains. The settlement began around 1865 as Connally's Store, a trading post for area ranchers. By 1880, D. T. Winters had established a gin and mill, and the community grew into a small farm and ranch service center. It was renamed for William A. A. "Bigfoot" Wallace, the celebrated Texas Ranger, Indian fighter, and frontiersman, whose reputation gave the place its distinctive name. The Bigfoot Wallace Museum, built as a replica of his cabin, preserves that connection today, and the museum also houses a replica of the building where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed. Like many rural crossroads, Bigfoot's fortunes followed agriculture and energy. A local school operated in the community until it merged with Devine's schools in 1949, and the development of the nearby Bigfoot oilfield in the 1950s brought a period of renewed activity. The population has remained small — estimated at around 75 residents for much of the late 20th century — and the community keeps a post office, a couple of businesses, and three churches, along with the Bigfoot Community Center housed in the former 1925 school building. Students in the area attend the Devine Independent School District. The community's name and its frontier heritage give it an outsized identity relative to its size, drawing visitors curious about Bigfoot Wallace and the early days of South Texas. For residents, Bigfoot offers a quiet, history-rich rural setting within reach of Devine, Pearsall, and San Antonio.
